The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK (CILT(UK)) is the membership organisation for professionals involved in the movement of goods and people and their associated supply chains. It is the UK National Council of CILT International.
Logistics and transport professionals work across a wide variety of disciplines, modes and industry sectors and members of the Institute are involved in the management and design of infrastructure, systems, processes and information flow and in the creation, management and development of effective organisations. The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT (UK)) aims to add value to the individual and corporate members by enhancing their knowledge, careers, and businesses by setting, supporting and delivering professional standards and education and by promoting Logistics, Transport and their associated supply chains to society as a whole.
Overview
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) delivers many services through nine professional sectors; Active Travel and Planning, Aviation, Bus and Coach, Freight Forwarding, Logistics and Supply Chain, Operations Management, Ports Maritime and Waterways, Rail and Transport Planning. These provide specialist activities and multi-sector engagement through their associated Forums and Policy Groups. The Institute currently has over 25 specialist Forums, including opportunities for Young Professionals.
Primary Objectives
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK (CILT(UK)) offers members:
Connection: Networking and the sharing of good practice and innovation with professionals. The Institute works across multiple sectors and modes through regional and national events, and their Young Professionals and special interest groups.
Professional voice: Representation at government level and amongst other key stakeholders within the community. This is achieved by promoting the membership and profession through our publications (Logistics and Transport Focus) and policy (policy groups).
Professional Recognition: Opportunities to demonstrate their professional competence through achievement and progression through the Institute's professional membership grades. The Institute is able to award Chartered (grades page) status to members who can demonstrate that they meet the stringent criteria.
Personal Development: Support to develop a professional career within the profession through Continuing Professional Development, Education, qualifications, networking, mentoring and knowledge sharing.
History
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) International, formerly The Chartered Institute of Transport, was formed in 1919 and was granted its Royal Charter in 1926.
The growth of its overseas sections led to a restructuring in 1994 under which 10 national councils were established in various parts of the world. The Institute operates as a co-ordinating body and custodian of the Royal Charter. The Chartered Institute of Transport in the UK (CILT UK) was formed as the United Kingdom National Council and is the largest national council with over half the total worldwide membership of CILT. In 1999 the former Institute of Logistics and Transport (ILT) took over from CIT UK as the UK National Council.
In April 2004 the Institute's membership voted in favour of ILT adopting the word 'Chartered' into its title. In May 2004 the Institute officially became 'The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK'. All National Councils are effectively 'chartered' through their membership of CILT and are represented on its governing Council. CILT continues to hold the Royal Charter under the authority of the (UK) Privy Council. Subject to certain qualifications, individual members of any National Council hold chartered status under the authority of this Royal Charter.

CILT (UK) Chair
CILT(UK) Chair The CILT Chair actively engages with members and helps develop CILT to ensure all members are represented at both board and executive level. The chair has ultimate governance responsibility for the Institute. The CILT Chair is elected for five years to support the growth of the Institute's profile as the leading logistics and transport professional body. Current Chair is Professor Richard Wilding OBE FCILT BSc PhD CEng Eur Ing FIET FCIPS. Richard Wilding is Full Professor and Chair in Supply Chain Strategy, Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Cranfield School of Management.
CILT Chief Executive
Kevin Richardson FCILT is the Institute's Chief Executive. Kevin Richardson joined the Institute as Chief Executive in 2015 from XPO Logistics, where he held the role of European Development Director. Kevin has been a member of the Institute for 28 years and is now responsible for the day-to-day management of CILT, meeting regularly with politicians and business leaders to ensure the profession remains a key priority in keeping the UK's economy moving. An experienced senior logistics executive with over 35 years' experience in the sector, Kevin has extensive knowledge in operational and project management across Europe.
Membership and Chartered membership
Individual Membership
Membership is available to all that have an interest in the profession at base entry levels, for higher grades, each application is assessed. The Institute offers five grades of membership: the non-assessed grades are affiliate and student, whilst the assessed grades include Member (MILT), Chartered Member (CMILT) and Chartered Fellow (FCILT). Membership grades demonstrate professional achievements and are regarded as a prerequisite to career progression by many employers worldwide.
- Affiliate - This entry level grade is open to anyone beginning a career or with an interest in the activities that our profession represents. No experience or formal qualifications are required at this stage.
- Student - Student membership is open to individuals studying full-time for a logistics and/transport qualification. (Note: membership is available to Apprentices and post-graduates through the eMember grade).
- Member (MILT) - for logistics and transport professionals who can demonstrate their technical knowledge and experience meets the Professional Standards set by the Institute.
- Chartered Member (CMILT) - for logistics and transport professionals who can demonstrate their technical knowledge, education and/or experience meets the Professional Standards set by the Institute. This grade entitles you to vote *and use of the post-nominal letters CMILT
- Chartered Fellow (FCILT) - the highest grade of membership and recognises those working in the most influential roles within the profession.
Corporate Membership
Corporate members include 3PL/hauliers, bus and coach, manufacturers, retailers, suppliers, multi-modal, public authorities, and academic partners. Corporate Members are awarded one of five grades ranging from Bronze to Platinum +. Corporate Members individuals can engage with the Institute and benefit from the wide range of networking and business development opportunities that are on offer. They are gain access to the market intelligence resources offered by the Institute and to participate in their industry-specific benchmarking services including:
- LogMark a benchmarking club for those operating in the supply chain, logistics and transport. Members range from retailers, manufacturers, service providers and operators including both blue-chip national and international companies.
- BusMark enables operators of any fleet size to benchmark, share and discuss industry best practice. The club is dedicated to driving improvement in the passenger transport sector by benchmarking an organisation's operational performance with other bus and coach companies in the UK and Ireland.
- PalMark is designed by Public Sector members to pursue operational excellence across critical business disciplines.
Awarding Organisation
CILT(UK) is an Awarding Organisation (AO) accredited and regulated by The Office of the Qualifications and Examination Regulation (Ofqual), Qualifications Wales and CCEA Regulation to offer regulated qualifications in logistics and transport. These qualifications meet the regulatory requirements for the design, delivery, assessment and award within the England, Wales and Northern Ireland and are recognised globally. Organisations need to apply to become a recognised or they can partner existing CILT (UK) Training Centres. The Institute offers a suite of regulated qualifications that cover the main nine professional sectors; these are qualifications that meet the regulatory requirements for the design, delivery, assessment and award of units and qualifications. CILT qualifications are recognised worldwide as driving leading edge thinking in all sectors of Transport and Logistics thus CILT(UK) also endorses and accredits qualifications or programmes.
Professional Development
The Institute supports career advancement through Continuing Professional Development (CPD), education, qualifications, networking, mentoring and training. The Professional Development Directory contains a wide range of new, interesting and relevant programmes and qualifications for individuals' and organisations' initial and continued professional development. The programmes are reviewed and fully refreshed every year to ensure CILT is up-to-date, training and development provider for the logistics, transport and operations management professions. There are four delivery options available for training and qualifications:
- in-company training
- public courses
- distance learning
- online learning
All learners receive a Learner Affiliate membership of CILT for the duration of their study, giving them access to member benefits. Learners are also supported by a distance learning advisor (DLA). The Institute also offers Mentoring Services to support members in their continuing professional development activities. This scheme is open to all members of the Institute regardless of membership grade, age or work status. All Institute Mentors have a proven commitment to the profession and support the aims of CILT(UK) to 'promote professional excellence'.
Knowledge Centre
The Institute's Knowledge Centre provides members with access to information in all areas of logistics, transport and the supply chain. The CILT Knowledge Centre allows Members to:

- Research and expand customer bases quickly and effectively
- Keep up to date with the latest thinking
- Demonstrate a commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and improved professional practice

President's Inauguration Lunch
The President's Inauguration Lunch celebrates the Institute's new President and the achievement of the outgoing President in May of each year.
Annual Logistics Conference and Dinner
The CILT Annual Conference attracts over 250 professionals from all sectors featuring high-calibre speakers, exploring the latest in supply chain management, logistics and transport issues. The event takes place in June of each year.
Logistics Research Network Conference (LRN)
The LRN Conference is one of the European forums for the presentation of research results, current practice and new ideas in supply chain management, logistics and transport. Papers are invited from academics, researchers and practitioners working in the field of logistics, transportation and supply chain management. The annual three-day conference is hosted by a UK university every year in September. The Institute works in association with the Seed Corn Research fund in order to assist in its research quest, by supporting small-scale research projects in universities. It was set up to provide a small research grant on a 'seed corn' basis to enable supply chain, logistics and transport researchers in the UK and Ireland to explore issues of current and academic interest. Logistics Dissertation of the Year Awards are also presented at the LRN Conference Dinner - students can submit their work and be entered into a prize draw. This is open to post and undergraduates.
The Annual Awards for Excellence
The CILT's Annual Awards for Excellence recognises outstanding achievements in logistics and transport. These awards are a celebration of the pioneering spirit that forges growth and leadership in the industry. The dinner is held annually in October.
Fellows' Lunch
The Fellows' lunch takes place annually in December. The Institute's President also delivers a 'state of the nation' address describing briefly CILT's position in relation to stated objectives and summarises CILT's performance year to date.
Association of Railway Executives (ARE)
The Association of Railway Executives [1] is a networking group supported by The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. ARE offers the rail industry's top leaders a chance to meet and discuss topical issues. Membership is typically limited to Directors plus their nominated direct reports who attend four events per year. Aspire is a charitable careers foundation within the institute. It provides funding opportunities for education, training and development to UK and international applicants. Established in 2009, the long-term objective of Aspire is to raise the standard practices adopted by our profession by encouraging new entrants and further developing existing talent. <ref>[2]
DOPsys
DOPsys (Deliver, Offload & Position System) is a certified process for technical distribution and last mile delivery. The DOPsys process was developed with a view to bringing excellence to the last mile through quality process and training. DOPsys is accredited through CILT(UK) and is a standard governing last mile technical distribution. DOPsys delivers a consistently high-standard in technical distribution for service providers delivering the service and more importantly for their clients and end users procuring the service. DOPsys "Your Last Mile Manager" deals with the technical processes, the personnel training, the service specific insurance, the IT infrastructure, the specialist mechanical handling equipment and the transport vehicles required to ensure a Premium Technical Distribution Service.
The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS)
The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a voluntary accreditation scheme that promotes best practice for commercial vehicle operators. FORS covers efficiency, and environmental protection by encouraging and training fleet operators to measure, monitor and improve performance. FORS provides accreditation pathways for operators of any type, and for those organisations that award contracts and specify transport requirements.
Humanitarian Logistics Association (HLA)
Humanitarian Logistics Association promotes and supports professional development initiatives within the global humanitarian logistics community of practice. It acts as a neutral interface to leverage knowledge, information and capability across humanitarian organisations. CILT hosts and provides administrative support for the HLA charity.
PTRC Education and Research Services Ltd (PTRC)
PTRC is a trading subsidiary of CILT(UK). It is an international, multi-disciplinary training and development organisation specialising in training and staging events on all matters relating to transport planning, highway engineering and urban transport design.
NOVUS
NOVUS is an industry-sponsored initiative which operates under the charitable umbrella of CILT(UK). The scheme encourages and supports talented young people through their logistics and supply chain related degree courses and into employment.
