Kevin Can Wait is an American sitcom television series starring Kevin James. The series airs on September 19, 2016. The series marks James's second role in a CBS sitcom, after The King of Queens, which runs from 1998 to 2007. On March 23, 2017, CBS updated series for the second season, which aired on September 25, 2017 and ends on May 7, 2018.

The series begins with James starring as the recently retired Nassau County, New York police and father of three, married to Donna (Erinn Hayes). Starting with the second season, Donna's character has died, and the new female lead series is Vanessa Cellucci (Leah Remini), Kevin's former rival on strength and now his partner at their new security firm, Monkey Fist Security. While the first season focuses on the personal and family life of Kevin, the second concerns his new profession, his relationship with Vanessa, and his adaptation to life as a single parent.

Kevin Can Wait canceled by CBS on May 12, 2018, after two seasons and 48 episodes.

Plot

Kevin Gable is a retired Nassau County resident who lives in Massapequa, New York, on Long Island, with his wife Donna, Kendra and Sara's daughter, and Jack's son. She looks forward to a relaxed early retirement with her friends, who are also retired officers: Goody, Duffy, and Mott. However, Kevin soon realizes his smaller pension salary and family challenges will delay the plan. Her older daughter Kendra, who was away college, moved back to town with her unemployed fiance, Chale, and they started living in the garage; Sara becomes increasingly difficult, with anger management problems; and Jack's younger son is a hypochondriac who sees a school therapist for anxiety-related problems.

During the first season, Kevin held various side jobs to supplement his retirement income while the family handled several issues, including Kendra and Chale's marriage. The first season episodes revolve around Kevin and Donna, though Kevin is often seen with groups of his friends. Most scenes during the first season take place either in the Gable household or in Enzo's bar (where Kendra is hired and where Kevin hangs out with his friends).

In addition, the James family has appeared in the series (apart from regular cast member Gary Valentine). James's real life wife, Steffiana De La Cruz, and two daughters James, Shea James and Sienna James, have appeared in the series; De La Cruz was in "The Back Out" as half of the couple Kevin and Donna tried to be friends, while Shea and Sienna appeared in various roles in both seasons. Remini's husband, Angelo PagÃÆ'¡n, also appeared in "Business Unusual". Also, both theme songwriters Michael Delguidice, and writer Mike Soccio, have appeared in the series in small roles.

Production

In October 2015, it was announced that Kevin James would be starring in the new comedy-family TV series for CBS, while Rock Reuben would be the executive producing the series, and Bruce Helford would play the launch event.

On October 17, 2016, CBS booked a full season of 22 episodes. In November 2016, Bruce Helford came out of the series as a showrunner after the first thirteen episodes, due to creative differences. Cheerful Rob Long alum replaces Helford as a performer. On January 6, 2017, two additional episodes were added, bringing the season to a total of 24 episodes.

The series was filmed entirely on Long Island at Gold Coast Studios in Bethpage, New York. The premiere episode was filmed on April 1, 2016. Production on the next episode began to be recorded on August 5, 2016.

Season two originally supposed to contain 22 episodes. However, like the previous season, finally hit by 24 episodes.

Casting

In January 2016, Taylor Spreitler has been cast in this series as Kendra, Kevin's daughter. In February 2016, Ryan Cartwright, Mary-Charles Jones, and James DiGiacomo had been cast in the series, as Kendra's boyfriend, and James's other children's characters, respectively. That same month, Leonard Earl Howze and Erinn Hayes joined cast members who portrayed James's character and former police partner and James's wife, respectively. In March 2016, Lenny Venito and Gary Valentine joined the cast.

In September 2016, it was announced Ray Romano and Gina Brillon would be guest stars. In November 2016, it was announced that Adam Sandler would also be a guest star. In March 2017, it was announced former star James King James, associate Leah Remini will be the guest star in the final two episodes of the first season.

In June 2017, Remini rose to the regular series starting with Season 2; Shortly afterwards, it was announced that Erinn Hayes would not be returning for a second season show. The source quoted in Variety article confirms that Remini will return as Detective Vanessa Cellucci, the character she described at the end of the first season, and that Hayes's dismissal is for creative reasons and "not a reflection" of the actress's performance. In August 2017, Hayes's character will be reportedly killed before the second season begins and the season will be 7-10 months after season one ends, to make room for Remini.

Reception

Critical response

During the first season, Kevin Can Wait received negative reviews from critics. In the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, this series has a 30% approval rating, based on 23 reviews, with an average rating of 3.9/10. The site's important consensus reads, "Kevin James proved a fun and fun excellence, but < Kevin Can Wait depends heavily on predictable jokes, not funny, and a series of subplots that are not eager to stand out from the crowd. " At Metacritic, which gives a normalized ranking, this series has a score of 39 out of 100, based on 17 critics, showing "generally unfavorable reviews".

With the shooting of Hayes and the addition of Remini in the second season, the retooling series also received negative reviews, this time comparing this series as much lower than James and Remini's former show The King of Queens.

Controversy

The replacement of Erinn Hayes with Leah Remini, and how the show dealt with the death of Donna Gable, has been a source of controversy for this series. Critics have been picked up mainly on episodes of "Civil Ceremonies" and "Thieves of Grief". In the first, which served as the season's premiere, criticism was placed on a brief mention of Donna's death, through a piece of mail, and the next joke that many found unpleasant. The next episode, the fifth episode of the season, is highlighted because of the plot that characters use a single parent support group to quit their job and romantic life. The series' of Donna's mention of being reduced after his death, as well as no specific cause for his death, was also subjected to criticism.

Viewers and event critics remain divided into retools. Some claimed the decision was a well-made decision, and that the chemistry that James had with Remini had made the series quality better. Others say that the burning of Hayes, and the addition of Remini to how the show handles the death of his character, with poor manuscript quality, has made the show worse. Despite the division, both Hayes and Remini talk to each other. Remini stated that, before Hayes's shot, he was looking forward to working with her again; Hayes (who has remained largely silent during the shootings so far) asked fans not to blame Remini.

It has been rumored and hinted that the addition of Leah Remini stars is an attempt to save the show from the cancellation. Many have argued this theory not only because of their chemistry and their ability to play each other well, but also to capitalize on their success in running the King of Queens a decade earlier. However, James insisted that the choice was purely creative, as the authors felt they were running out of ideas, and he was not sure if it would continue beyond the second season. James also stated that the original storyline of the series is to have him as a single father, but the original producer gave him instead.

Regardless of the controversy surrounding the reshuffle, the series' ratings remain stable. On December 1, 2017, this series averaged 8.2 million viewers (with delayed views) this season, competing against the more famous Top 20 series Dancing with the Stars and The Voice >. The series also performed well in the highly coveted 18-49 demographics, ranking as the fifth highest-ranked program on CBS in that category.
