History
The vehicle is mainly manufactured to meet the Army's need for a weapons tractor, and is designed to tow a field gun (L118 Light Gun) with a ton of ammunition and other equipment in the rear load chamber, giving it an alternative name of Land Rover One Tonne >. The vehicle is designed to be easily transportable by air; The position of 3.5-liter Rover V8 engine under and to the rear of the cabin removes the hood on the front, making the vehicle more or less cuboid-shaped so as to reduce unused space on the transport plane. Of particular concern is limited charge and stability, especially when crossing a slope.
The official name of 101 Forward Control comes from a 101-inch (2.565 mm) wheel-wheel vehicle, and the driver's position, above and slightly in front of the front wheels using a fairly large 9.00 Ã 16 inch tire. To overcome the extra height above the ground, the wheel has an unusual feature for Land Rover (but used for years on the much older and similar Mercedes Unimog S404); a flange around the center of the wheel has an artificial tread pattern that forms a step for the crew when entering the cabin, which is named the wheel-step.
The 101FC's development began in 1967, with a design team led by Norman Busby (October 14, 1931 - June 30, 2005). Production took place between 1972 and 1978. In common practice of the armed forces, many vehicles were not used for several years and were unheard of for military vehicle enthusiasts to pick up this vehicle after only a few thousand miles of service. All vehicles manufactured at the Land Rover plant at Lode Lane, Solihull are General Soft Trap ("rag top") rifle tractors, though many were rebuilt with hard ambulance bodies and as radio communication trucks. A rare variant is the body of electronic war Vampire. It is estimated that only 21 are produced and less than half are still present today. One was destroyed at Buncefield Oil Terminal Fire.
101FC also served with the RAF Regiment. Two 101 are allocated for each Rapier missile. The UK Rapier RAF system uses three Land-Rovers in deployment: a 24V winch mounted 101 Firing Unit Tractor (FUT) to pull the launch trailer, containing four Rapier missiles, guidance and radio equipment; a 12V winch mounted 101 Tracking Radar Tractor (TRT) to pull the Blindfire Radar trailer, also loaded with four Rapier missiles and guidance equipment; and 109 Land Rover to pull reloading trailers with 9 Rapier missiles and loaded with other equipment and equipment.
101FC also served in an ambulance role, with ambulance bodywork built by Marshall of Cambridge. 101FC is produced in left and right drives with 12 or 24 volt electrical system.
Some 101FCs are manufactured with PTO powered Nokken capstan winches mounted on the chassis at the center of the vehicle, allowing winching from either front or rear. Another variation on a small number of pre-production vehicles is the addition of a PTO-driven axle trailer, creating a 6x6 vehicle, this adaptation was abandoned before full production when it was discovered that the trailer had a tendency to push the vehicle to its side when pushed over rough terrain.
Substitution
In the late 1990s, the 101s were disabled by the MoD and replaced with Defense and Pinzgauer vehicles. Many 101 companies have entered private ownership and there are growing owner clubs supporting these spare parts and providing technical support. The club also keeps a list of vehicles that are known to survive around the world.
Prototype 101 is built on vehicle recovery. Only one is known to exist in the Heritage Motor Center in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Australia
The Australian Army acquired fifty 101 vehicles, which were used to withdraw the Rapier missile carrier aircraft. These 101s are discarded and some of them remain in private hands.
Movie careers
Thirty-one 101s converted by Land Rover with artistic bodyshells for Sylvester Stallone 1995 Judge Dredd . Land Rover is said to be the only surviving vehicle manufacturer in the world in 2139 when the film is tuned, and a green oval logo can be seen on the side of the vehicle, known as "City CABs". Some of these prop vehicles are still in driving conditions and are often seen on Land Rover shows. There is also a FC FC that was stripped of FC101 (no canopy or sideboard) used as a "bodies collection" vehicle in the 2016 movie The Purge: Election Year .
