Histori
In May 2015, Channel 4 News published an investigation in which they alleged that "at least 115 ISIS-related people" appear to have used Surespot between November 2014 and May 2015. In June 2015, Surespot users wrote a blog post about how Surespot Developers have stopped responding to questions repeated "government request for information", leading to the user stating that the Surespot developer "under the silencing command".
Surespot is specifically mentioned in the defense treaties in which a 17-year-old US citizen is accused of providing material support to ISIS.

Reception
On November 4, 2014, Surespot scored 5 of 7 points on the Electronic Frontier Foundation's security messaging scorecard. It has received points for encrypted communication during transit, has encrypted communications with an accessible key by the provider (end-to-end encryption), which allows users to independently verify their correspondent identity, once the code is open to independent review ( open source), and to have its security design well documented. It loses points because past communications are unsafe if the encryption key is stolen (no secrecy forwards) and because there has not been an independent security audit recently.
Features
Surespot provides offline backup via iTunes (PC or Mac) on an iOS version, or local device storage on an Android version. An app user can use multiple identities, for example for personal or business use.
This app supports deleting messages from the receiving device; sending pictures, audio messages (in the past only after in-app purchases, currently free), and Emoji icons; and user blocking.
So far there is no support for group messages and sending files other than photos.
Technology
Surespot uses 256 bit AES-GCM encryption using keys made with 521 bit ECDH. This is a Public key cryptography system with public and private keys for shared secrets. The shared secret is used to exchange information safely.
Business model
This app is free to install and use. Through in-app purchases, one can add functions, such as voice mail features. In addition to making money through in-app purchases, surespot is a donation software. Donations can be made through Bitcoin, creditcards, or PayPal.
