A vertical forward grip is a vertical grip designed to adhere to firearms for forward hand (or "off hand"). This helps in maneuvering firearms, because the natural angle of one's outstretched hand is more oriented to grasping objects at vertical angles, rather than horizontally perpendicular to the body. Foregrips can decrease accuracy in shooting precision rifles if the shooter tends to "move the gun".

The sloping forward grip can provide a similar function to the vertical forward grip. One of the popular products is MagPul Dynamics AFG, or Angled Fore Grip. This lets the operator put his palm to the handle while pushing the thumb down on the top of the gun.

The shorter version is referred to as "Fat grip", mainly intended to keep the rifle's hand moving forward from its snout.
Legality on the gun in the US.
The legality of vertical foregrips on pistols in the United States is unclear. In the United States, firearms are categorized by the National Firearms Act and firearms made with special features are subject to restrictions and controls. In case of a vertical front grip on the gun, the law does not explicitly define such features as part of any category.
In May 1993, in response to legal action brought by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the South Carolina Court fact finding concluded that the modified pistol with the addition of a vertical front grip is still a gun and not a weapon device. After this, ATF dropped their charges and the case was not prosecuted; as no precedent is specified.
In an open letter sent to the Federal Firearms Licensees in April 2006, ATF declared their interpretation of the law; that installing a vertical front grip on the handgun is the same as making another Weapon category weapon (AOW) and subject to registration and taxation, with significant penalties for producing or owning unregistered weapons.
ATF has stated that the sloping handle does not make AOW of the gun.
