There has been much speculation about the fifth season of the show, because of the many cliffhangers at the end of the fourth season, such as the departure of Edie Britt, and whether he will return after the episode episode of "Mother Said". When asked about Sheridan's departure, Cherry commented, "He will not be back for several years", a reference to the 'five-year leap' shown by the event. Edie returns to Wisteria Lane with her new husband, Dave, played by Neal McDonough, who joins the players as a regular player. However, Sheridan left Desperate Housewives towards the end of the season when his character Edie died in an accident involving his car and dangerous power cord in the 18th episode of Season 5, "A Spark, To Penembt Dark.", Which aired on March 22, 2009.
There is also speculation as to whether Mike Delfino's character will return, after the last scene of season four, sets the next five years, which shows Susan in the arms of a new mysterious man, Jackson (Gale Harold). The fate of Mike Delfino was later revealed by actor James Denton, who plays Mike, when he told People magazine he would be back in Season 5. But "Mike and Susan are definitely separated," Denton told People.
On October 14, 2008, Gale Harold was badly injured in a motorcycle accident. His character, Jackson, played a pivotal role in the eighth episode of the fifth season "City on Fire", which found some Wisteria Lane residents trapped inside the nightclub fire. Cherry says Harold has been filming a scene all week for the episode and has been scheduled to be on site on Tuesday, the day of the accident. Marc Cherry said they would wait for the prognosis of the actor before deciding how to proceed, but at least some changes had to be made: "We knew we would rewrite one scene," he said. The show issued a statement: "Gale is part of the Desperate Housewives family and our thoughts and hopes with him for a quick recovery." Despite Harold's injuries and ongoing recovery, no major production disruption of Desperate Housewives is expected. Six months after his serious motorcycle accident, Harold has returned to work. Harold's re-episode aired in the US on May 3rd. The actor signed for the series until the end of the season but said he has not been asked to return for 2009-10. Finally, he was not asked to return in Season 6.
