Plot

With a department store in its class that constantly loses money, Gabriel Service, Sr. (Lewis Stone) was forced to free some of his employees, including Tim Benton who did not know the rebels, but was faithful and long serving (Lionel Barrymore). Then, the Service returns her home to her big house to inform her family about their own financial difficulties; he has kept the 200-year-old family company afloat with his own money recently. Both young adult children, Caroline (Elizabeth Allan) and Michael (Phillips Holmes), or their stepmother Isobel (Benita Hume) are very serious at first, despite repeated warnings over the past few months. Isobel had also seen another man behind her unconscious husband's back.

The situation got so bad that Philip Bendicott (Lawrence Grant), one of Service's business partners, urged him to sell to Stoner, whose chain of stores is one of several growing businesses, serving lower-class customers. The service hated the idea, but decided he had no choice. Gossip soon spread, especially when Stoner himself came to check the department store.

When he delivered the news to his family, they were all surprised. The next day, when she returns home, Caroline tells him that Isobel has run away with her lover. Caroline and Michael urged their father to keep company and keep fighting. Though satisfied with their passion and unexpected concerns about the store, the Service rejected their proposal. Meanwhile, Benton has started a very successful business in his own home, with his wife Lil (Doris Lloyd) baking delicious cakes and cakes and their offspring, Willie (Douglas Walton (actor)) and Elsie (Viva Tattersall), interfering. Michael flew back from Paris and Berlin, where his family thought he was on vacation, instead he showed them the striking furniture design, which he believed could be produced and sold by department stores, Caroline wanted to work in the department store. But Service Sr does not want to take risks and decides to sell. Afterwards, on the way to a lawyer to sign his shop, he ran to Benton. Benton told him about the "Benton cake company" and made him feel it. Mr. Service was delighted by the pastry and Benton tried to make him change his mind. When the Service read in the paper that the deal was done, he was furious at Stoner's displeasure that he canceled the sale, for example and Benton's encouragement. The last scene with Service Sr., Service Jr., Caroline, Jeoffrey Fielding (Colin Clive), the service assistant and admirer Caroline, and Benton is an upbeat scene, where youths take over helping older people to feel, that things keep walking. Michael Service tasted a cake from Benton and ordered 4 dozen/day for the store, Caroline wanted to live off her income and "very poor" was at Jeoffrey's level and finally the rain stopped and the rainbow came out. Together, The Service looks forward to the future with optimism.
