Short Message Service (SMS) (Roaming in a GSM Network)
src: what-when-how.com

The Short Message Service Center ( SMSC ) is a network element on the mobile phone network. The goal is to store, forward, modify, and send Short Message messages (SMS).

The complete determination of SMSC according to 3GPP is Short Message Service - Service Center (SMS-SC).

The SMS Basic Path is

  1. From mobile to another phone - referred to as MO-MT (Derived from Mobile - Terminated Mobile)
  2. From mobile to content provider (also known as Large Account/ESME) - referred to as MO-AT (Derived-Mobile - Terminated Application)
  3. From app to phone - referred to as AO-MT (Derived Application - Phone Terminated)

The task of the SMSC can be described as

  1. Receipt of text messages (SMS) from wireless network users
  2. Text message storage
  3. Forward text messages
  4. Sending text messages (SMS) to wireless network users
  5. Maintenance of unique time stamps in text messages

When a user sends a text message (SMS message) to another user, the message is stored in the SMSC (short message service center), which delivers it to the intended user when they are available. This is a store and advanced option.

The SMS Center (SMSC) is responsible for handling SMS operations from the wireless network.

  1. When an SMS message is sent from a mobile phone, it first reaches the SMS center.
  2. The SMS center then forwards the SMS message to the destination.
  3. The main task of SMSC is to route SMS messages and organize the process. If the recipient is unavailable (for example, when the phone is turned off), SMSC will store SMS messages.
  4. This will forward the SMS message when the recipient is available and the message expiration period is not exceeded.

SMSC can be used to interact with other applications, such as spreadsheets can interact with SMSC that allow messages to be sent SMS from Google spreadsheets, or to send SMS from Excel. Incoming messages to long numbers or short codes can also be passed via SMSC which allows m2m or Telematics communication.

SMS message validity

SMS messages are temporarily stored in the SMS center if the recipient's mobile phone is unavailable. It is possible on most phones to specify an expiration period after the SMS message is removed from the SMS center. Once deleted, the SMS message is no longer available to send to the recipient's mobile phone (even though it's on line). The validity period must be considered by the handset user as a request, since the SMSC itself can be configured to ignore or otherwise handle the messaging schedule.

Message status report

SMS senders need to set flags in SMS messages to notify SMS centers that they want status reports about sending these SMS messages. This is usually done by changing the Settings on the mobile handset.
