A wireless repeater (also called wireless range extender ) takes an existing signal from a wireless router or wireless access point and re-broadcasts to create a second network. When two or more hosts must be connected to each other via the IEEE 802.11 protocol and the distance is too long for the direct connection to be made, wireless repeaters are used to bridge the gap. This can be a special stand-alone computer network device. Also, some wireless network interface controllers (WNIC) support operations in that mode. Those outside the primary network will be able to connect through the new "recurring" network. However, as far as the original router or access point is concerned, only the MAC repeater is connected, so it is necessary to enable security features on the wireless repeater. Wireless repeater is typically used to increase signal coverage and power within the home and small office.

Usage

  • When there is no wireless hotspot in an area
  • In an area with many disturbances.
    • Interference can be caused by many environmental factors such as microwaves (such as from a microwave oven), metal appliances or metallic layers or blocked sight lines.
  • When the distance between the computer and the wireless access point or wireless router is too large for the internal wireless network interface card to receive wireless signals.
  • When a network is in an environment with interference and many computers, networks or hubs

Weakness

Since only one wireless device can transmit at once, the wireless transmission is duplicated (the router to the repeater and then the repeater to the client rather than just the router to the client), and so:

  • The wireless output is reduced by at least 50%.
  • Wireless interruptions (e.g., with other networks on the same channel) are at least doubled.
  • Potentially open another security attack vector. Older devices do not always support WPA2-PSK so that while the original network may be secure, the secondary is potentially open.

Connectivity

Some devices extend the wireless range connected via a USB port. This USB adapter adds Wi-Fi capability to desktop PCs and other devices that have a standard USB port. USB not only supports the necessary data transfer for the network but also provides resources so that the adapter does not require a power outlet.

Compatibility

There is a wireless range extending device that complies with all 802.11 protocols. Most devices are compatible with 802.11 backwards compatible. However, 802.11ac runs at 5 GHz and requires an access point capable of operating 5 GHz. 802.11ac is the latest and third generation Wi-Fi standard for wireless home networks. 802.11ac equipment is compatible with 802.11n, 802.11g or 802.11b appliances.

Longer range extenders will not be able to repeat signals from newer generation routers. The compatibility of security encryption is also important and should be at the same level of compatibility in order for the signal to be extended. For example, long range extenders that support WEP and WPA will not be able to increase the WPA2-encrypted signal from the router.

Alternative

Most wireless repeaters (or extender ranges) are custom built, but certain wireless routers can be flash with special firmware like DD-WRT to give them the 'range extender' option.

A better option for extending wireless coverage is to configure a secondary box as a wireless access point, with a cable connection between the LAN ports on this secondary box and the LAN port on the main box (router). If an Ethernet cable is not an option, the alternative is a powerline network - AV500 technology is not expensive and good. The wireless extender kit includes a powerline adapter module (connected to a wireless router) and a wireless extender module (integrated powerline network and wireless access point) is available.
