Toploader Transmission is a manually activated three- and four-speed gearbox introduced in 1963 by Ford Motor Company to replace BorgWarner T-10. It was used in most of Ford and Mercurys from 1964 to 1973 as well as some foreign models. Officially set the 3.03 three speed or four-speed Ford design. 3.03 is the distance of the center line between the counter shaft and the main shaft. The toploader gets its name from the fact that the access plates to the inner work are located at the top of the main casing as opposed to the side, the conventions used on most gearboxes like Ford Dagenham or GM's Saginaw or Muncie. This feature increases the casing's rigidity significantly. Distinguishing three speeds from four is as simple as counting fasteners on the top plate. Four speeds have ten; three, nine. Both the three and four speed top loader gearboxes are designed to function in a constant net, since the alignment arm is used instead of the sliding gear, and is fully synchronized, with the exception of the opposite. The forward teeth are the helical type while the reverse gear includes the exterior of the first and second casing sleeves is the pacemaker. This transmission is also known as Tremec T-170, HEH, or RUG depending on year (s) of production. At some point in the early 70s production was moved to Mexico and the name was changed to Tremec.

Specifications

The toploader consists of two components: the main casing, which encloses the gears, input and counter shafts, and the tailings, which encloses the speedometer gear and output shaft. The main case measures 12 "in length, while the restraints are 14", 14 / 2 "or 17", depending on the app.

The shifter boss is thrown into the tailhousing along various points depending on the location of the shifter, as required for each model. Generally Falcons and Comets have shifter mounted forward along the housing, Mustang backward, and Fairlanes and Fords full size somewhere in between. Toploaders are also designed for two specific applications: small blocks such as Ford Windsor engines, and large blocks such as Ford FE engines and the Ford 385 engine series. Some large blocks require a larger "input shaft" to withstand torque.
