Beware Of the GM/BMW 5L40E Transmission

The 5L40-E (and similar 5L50 ) is a series of automatic transmissions made by General Motors. Designed for longitudinal engine configurations, the series includes 5 front teeth and is used in GM Sigma platform vehicles from Cadillac, Pontiac Solstice, and Holden Commodore.

The electronically controlled transmission is designed around a fully articulated ravigneaux gear set that is electronically controlled from a range of hydraulically-range clutches, in combination with a one-way mechanical clutch. The core 5L40E unit is an automatic overdrive that replaces the single-speed 4-speed automatic 4-speed automatic gearbox made in France, and like they have a torque converter converter to eliminate slipping losses in selected forward ranges. It's assembled in Strasbourg, France.

5L40/50 series was replaced in 2007 with 6L50 six speed.

5L40-E (A5S360R)

The 5L40-E has been designated either in the "M82" (rear-wheel drive) or "MX5" (all-wheel drive) version for service in BMW vehicles from 2000 model year until the design is replaced by (for BMW) 6L45E and (for all others) the 6L50E series automatic electronic transmission in 2007. It is designed for in-vehicle service of up to 4000 pounds (1814 kg) GVWR and in services mated with a choice of final drive ratios of 3.42: 1, 3, 73: 1, or 3.91: 1 depending on the carline. 5L40-E has been designed for the 1.8-3.6 L engine with maximum torque of 250Ã, ft Ã, Â · lbf (340Ã, NÃ,Âμm). It is underestimated when used in a combination of M57D30 engines. As the output of torque M57D30 rated 390/410Nm.

The 5L50 is engineered to handle pressure from vehicles weighing up to 5000 pounds (2268 kg) of GVWR. The final drive ratio includes 2.93: 1 and 3.23: 1. The 5L50 can handle up to 311 ftÃ, Â · lbf (422Ã, Â ° m) of torque.
