Plot

Lewis is a 12 year old inventor who aspires to an orphanage whose inventions have frightened potential parents. She worked all night in the machine to scan her memory to find her mother, who left her in an orphanage when she was a baby. While carrying a scanner into his school's science, Lewis meets a 13-year-old Wilbur Robinson, a mysterious boy who claims to be a police time from the future. Wilbur had to recover the time machine worn by a man wearing a bowler hat. Lewis tried to demonstrate the scanner, but it had been sabotaged and shattered, throwing science into chaos. Lewis leaves while Bowler Hat Guy, with the help of a robotic bowler cap named Doris, fixes and steals the scanner.

Wilbur met Lewis at the orphanage and asked him to fix the scanner. Lewis agrees to do so only if Wilbur can prove that he is telling the truth, which Wilbur did by bringing them into 2037 in a second time machine. When they arrive, he and Wilbur are involved in disputes and accidents. Wilbur asks Lewis to fix the time machine, but Lewis has another condition: Wilbur should take him to visit his mother afterward. Reluctantly, Wilbur agreed and hid Lewis in the garage. Lewis did not stay there long, and finally met the rest of the Robinson family except Cornelius, Wilbur's father, who was on a business trip. After following Lewis, Bowler Hat Guy and Doris try to kidnap her, but the Robinsons beat them. Robinsons offered to adopt Lewis, but changed his mind when they learned that he was from the past. Wilbur claimed to lie to Lewis about bringing him back to see his mother, causing Lewis to run in disgust.

Lewis later discovers that Cornelius Robinson is, in fact, a future version of himself, and Wilbur is the son of his future. Lewis also discovered that Bowler Hat Guy is an adult version of Lewis's roommate, Michael "Goob" Yagoobian. Because he was kept awake by Lewis's work on the scanner, Goob fell asleep during an important Little League game and failed to make an important catch that cost the game. Goob became so bitter that he had never been adopted and lived in an orphanage long after it was closed. Doris is "DOR-15", one of Lewis's failed and abandoned inventions. They both blame Lewis for their misfortune and decided to destroy his career by stealing a memory scanner and claiming credit for it. Leaving Lewis behind, they take off with the scanner, drastically transforming the future into a world where Doris clones have enslaved humanity. Lewis fixes a second time machine, confronts Doris and destroys it by promising never to create it, restoring the future to his utopian self. After persuasion from Lewis, Wilbur tries to ask the adult Goob to join the family, but he has disappeared, apparently embarrassed by what he has done.

Back in time to Wilbur, Lewis finally met face to face with Cornelius. Cornelius explains how the memory scanner started a successful career, and persuaded Lewis to return to the science fair. Wilbur takes back Lewis, but makes one first stop: as promised, he takes Lewis back to the moment when his mother left him.

Wilbur dropped Lewis in time and left. Lewis heads to the fair, but on the way, he wakes up just in time to make the winners catch. Back at the exhibition, Lewis asked for one more chance to show his scanner, which was successful this time. She was adopted by Lucille, one of the science judges, and her husband Bud, who dubbed him "Cornelius" and took him home.
