Differences from movie
The main differences are settings and related characters. Instead the mother was a desperate alcoholic in Las Vegas, Nevada, the original story was based in Atascadero, California, a town not far from where Catherine Ryan Hyde lived.
Teacher burns, instead of being inflicted as heinous crimes by his father, were the result of napalm injuries suffered during military service during the Vietnam War. Trevor's discovery came from a different source (dropping the crime rate in one state prison) and Trevor's story drew considerable fame that he could meet the President of the United States before his death in Washington, DC. The conclusions of this book are drawn from the relationship of Arlene McKinney and Mr. St. Clair and the Action Paying Forward.
Finally, the character of Eugene Simonet (whose real name is Ruben St Clair) is an African-American in this novel; However, in the film he is portrayed by Kevin Spacey.
