Bristol Wiki Meeting

You are invited to Bristol Wiki Meetup which will take place at Commercial Space , 43-45 Corn Street, Bristol BS1 1HT on Sunday 28 July 2013 starting at 1:00 pm. If you've never been to one, this is an opportunity to meet other Wikipedians in an informal atmosphere for Wiki and non-Wiki chats and for beer or food if you like. Both experienced and new contributors are all accepted. This event is clearly not limited to just discussions on Bristol topics. Bring your laptop if you like and use free Wifi or just bring yourself. Better, bring a friend! Click the link for full details. Hope to see you. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:37, June 20, 2013 (UTC)

  1. The bold link at the foot of the selected "xyz" box is spread over two lines, which looks a bit awkward to me. The "selected articles" box ends with four bold links, including two links to the same target.
  2. On the main page, daily leading articles begin with bold links (Today, " Carrow Street is..."), even though there are other bold links at the end, "Full article". I think the first line of each article selected here should begin with a bold link to the article.

Thanks for your comment - may be addressed. If you (or anyone) have further comments that will be good.-- Rod talk 09:33, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
But the changes I made do not seem to appear on the portal page (even after clearing the server cache) and I do not know why? - Rod tal 10:52, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
I'm afraid the {{Selected article} template checks for "archive = no", whereas you have completely removed the "archive" parameter. - John of Reading (talk) 11:16, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
I can re-enter it but then it seems to default to two separate lines for "read more", "suggest" and "more articles". Is there any explanatory documentation about the template for the selected article, etc? - Rod talk 11:39, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

------------------------------------ - ------------------------------------------------- - ------------- There is no good overview documentation for this template. This portal currently uses {{Selected articles}} and {{Components of random portals with nominations}}. Both outputs are one complete link line, with no option to merge the line. To get full control over links, I recommend switching portals to {{Random portal components}} without the "footer" parameter, which will make the second row disappear completely.

Then, if {{Selected articles}} and the like do not generate the links you want, I suggest creating a Portal: Bristol/Article/Layout selected as a modified copy of {{Selected Articles}}. You then have full control over the formatting. There are several examples of this method in Portal: Vatican City/Selected article/Layout and Portal: Technology/Selected articles/Layout. - John of Reading (talk) 12:06, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

I think this might all go beyond my ability. I have created a Portal: Bristol/Selected article/Layout copying the given example but it seems to have no effect whatsoever.-- Rod talk 12:36, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
You did not see any changes because all subpages are still using the standard layout template. I have modified the Portal: Bristol/Selected article/1 to use a custom layout, and have removed the "footer" parameter from the call to {{Random portal component}}. I also change "max" to 1 temporarily so it's easier to experiment without having to edit 45 subpages. If you like what you see, the next step is to edit 44 other sub pages and then enable "max" back to 45. I can make the editing easier with AutoWikiBrowser if you want. - John of Reading (talk) 13:06, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for all your work on this. I do not know any parameter "footer". Your changes reach the required results and it would be great if you would do the other - does the same thing apply to selected images, biographies etc.? I followed what I did a few years ago in Portal: Somerset but look at which has two lines of things under the selected article. One thing Bristol does not have right now is the "Suggest" link that I think is useful enough for others to know how to add entries etc. (without having to play with the violin without having to know the complicated coding - allowing them to focus on the content).- - Rod talk 13:19, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
There we are then - three short labels on one line. Do you want me to do the same with images and biographies? - John of Reading (talk) 13:59, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
Brilliant, thanks. Yes please to others but maybe they need page layout in the same way? - Rod talk 14:12, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
Done, I think. Yes, I created two custom layout templates. - John of Reading (talk) 15:27, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
Look good and thanks again for the help. Do you think it's a feature portal mmets and features ready for Wikipedia: The flagship portal candidate? - Rod talk 15:47, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
