History

In response to Honda Magna, Suzuki made a Madura model. Like Magna, it's a V-four powered cruiser. Like Magna, Madura is offered with two different engine sizes. Both smaller bike engines displaced 700 cc, but while the larger Magna V65 displaced 1100 cc (actual 1,098 cc), the large Madura displaced 1,200 cc (actually 1165 cc).

Madura production was stopped after only two years. According to Peter Seifert of Vernon, B.C., Canada, 5099 Maduras was produced.

Features

The Madura has a V-four engine with hydraulic lifter. Lifting reduces maintenance, and avoids the cam-wear problems that hit Magna. Despite displacing more than 100 cc, Madura does not have more power or torque than Magna. The Madura is a factory rated at 117Ã, hp, while Magna is rated at 116Ã, hp. The actual strength in a road-tested bike is found around 89 horsepower (66 kW). By comparison, the same year the V65 put 93 hp.

In addition to maintenance-free lifter, Madura has automatically driven clutch that is driven automatically, and the low end drive shaft drive. The rear suspension is an advanced monoshock setting that uses a single rear swingarm tube to carry the driveshaft as well.

Ergonomically, Madura featured a low-sized seat, scoop, grip-back, and foot-control that would not be considered "advanced" by higher standards, but at the time it was noted for 14 "in front of the center of the seat.
