History

Establishment and initial release (2003- 08)

Suffering Amity was formed in Gympie, a town in South East Queensland in Australia by friends of Ahren Stringer and Troy Brady in their final year of high school. The band was named for a close friend of the band, who died in a car accident at the age of 17. 'Amity' called friendship and 'Suffering' was to show the struggles associated with causing death to band members. While still in high school, the band spent a lot of time playing at school concerts and lunch breaks.

In 2004, Amity Affliction released three self-titled demo songs produced by Scott Mullane on Aisle 6 Recording. At that time there were four members with former members of Garth Buchanan on bass and Lachlan Faulkner on Drums. In late 2004, vocalist Joel Birch joined the band. After that, mid 2005, Amity Affliction released their self-titled EP debut. After the release of EP they toured the East Coast on their 2005 East Coast Tour.

In 2007, there was a marching change when Lachlan Faulkner quit and Garth Buchanan went to join Behind Crimson Eyes. Lachlan Faulkner later joined Saint Lucia. They then hired drummer, Troels Thomasson, Chris Burt on Guitar (originally on Bass), Ahren Stringer now on bass and keyboardist addition, Trad Nathan. The Amity Affliction released five new EP songs titled High Hopes named for the home where The Amityville Horror occurred. The first emphasis comes in the CD/DVD package. The DVD featured a band that discussed the EP recording, it also featured bands on the street and performing.

Disconnected Relations (2008-2010)

The band released their debut studio album in 2008, titled Severed Ties . The album spent a week on the Australian Album Chart at number 26.

This is the first album featuring Chris Burt's brother, Ryan Burt on drums. The album features guest vocals from I Killed the Prom Queen/Confession, Matthew Wright from The Getaway Plan, JJ Peters of I Killing Prom Queen/Deez Nuts/Grips 'N' Tonic, Helmet Roberts and Lochlan Watt (Nuclear Summer). The music video was released for the song Fruity Lexia. Amity Affliction plays many events in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

During May 2009, they supported The Getaway Plan along with Perth band Elora Danan, on the National Final Tour of the Getaway Plan.

Amity Affliction toured headlining throughout Australia in 2009. They also played the 2009 Stairway to Hell Tour across Australia with support from UK band We Are the Ocean and Melbourne band Hopeless, with local support bands for each city. Amity Affliction then went to England for a full tour supporting We Are the Ocean with the Red and All Forgotten Flood.

Youngbloods and Glory Days (2010-11)

At the end of 2009 The Amity Affliction parted ways with guitarist Christopher Burt. The decisions are mutually beneficial and have been planned for some time. His last performance was in London in December 2009. While all members were still good friends with Chris, the decision was made in the best interests of the band. Chris now plays guitar and sings in the Brisbane-based SENSaii band. After that, Clint Ellis (Splattering) from The Getaway Plan replaced him.

In April 2010 the band flew to New York to record their second full record with Producer Machine. On May 10, the band uploaded new songs from this album, "I Hate Hartley" on their MySpace and the song was then available for free download.

On a date that was pushed-forward on June 18th as announced on their website (originally June 25, 2010) the band released their second studio album Youngbloods in Boomtown and Shock Records. The album was a huge success for the band, received critical acclaim and debuted at number 6 on the ARIA charts. Amity Affliction went on tour in July to support the release of their second album. Joining them is a Signal of Suffering, fellow Australians Recognition and the Red Flood Scottish band. They toured Western Australia a few weeks later, joining the local band Break Even.

In October the band announced they would release Glory Days , which would be a compilation of the old demo and the first two EPs as well as the two B-sides of Youngbloods . Glory Days was released on November 26th. They then announced a UK tour with Asking Alexandria and another with old friends Deez Nuts, Endwell and Louie Knuxx.

In the fall of 2010 The Amity Affliction conducted their first US interview with the alternative edition magazine Substream Music Press for the 22nd edition, right after signing to The Artery Foundation. The band knew that they would perform at the next Soundwave festival during the actual interview for the article.

On May 30, 2011, the band released their second music video from Youngbloods ; following the music video for "I Hate Hartley", the new music video for the song "Youngbloods" was released exclusively on Guvera.com.

In 2013, Amity Affliction is part of the Warped Tour in the United States with Chad Hasty (Glass Cloud) on drums and percussion because Ryan Burt damaged his corneas for a set in Portland, Oregon. Later on tour vocalist Joel Birch was also hospitalized for an unspecified illness, forcing the band to cancel their set in Pittsburgh. Fortunately the band's next show in Cleveland was played because of the help of Sam Carter (Architect), Jason Aalon Butler (Letlive.) And Chris Roetter (Like Moths To Flames) shared the stage as a vocal substitute for Joel. All subsequent performances are played with Joel back on vocals after his recovery.

Controversy

Shortly after the announcement of Chasing Ghosts album, the cover of the album was revealed. The cover depicts a man hanging on a tree that allegedly committed suicide. The graphic nature of this image causes a lot of controversy amongst social media and fans. The situation is very ironic because the main message behind this album is anti-suicide and urges fans who feel like turning people close to them and seeking help rather than taking their own lives.

Minor controversy occurred during the 2013 Warped Tour with The Amity Affliction and Memphis May Fire, when in the middle of the set Joel Birch called Memphis Mayman's Frontman Fire, Matty Mullins, about the sexist comments made for the presence of women at the Curve. The frontman then went on with his rough words about racist ridicule made against the band drummer/percussion replacement for the tour, Chad Hasty.
