Tongue thrust (also called reverse swallow or swallowing immaturity ) is the common name orofacial muscle imbalance , human behavior patterns in where the tongue extends through the anterior incisors during swallowing, during speech, and when the tongue is resting. Almost all babies exhibit swallowing patterns involving tongue protrusions, but at the age of six months most loses this reflex allows to swallow solid food.

Since 1958, the term "tongue encouragement" has been described and discussed in speeches and by dental publications by many authors. Many school-aged children have tongue-driven impulses. For example, according to recent literature, as many as 67-95 percent of children aged 5-8 years show a tongue-inducing, which may be related to or contribute to orthodontic or speech problems. Until the age of four, there is a possibility that the child will surpass the tongue's urge. However, if the pattern of tongue piercing is stuck outside of that age, it may be strengthened.

Cause

Factors that may contribute to thrusting the tongue include macroglossia (enlarged tongue), thumb sucking, large tonsils, hereditary factors, ankyloglossia (tie tongue), and some types of artificial nipples used in breastfed infants, as well as allergies or nasal congestion can cause tongue lying low in the mouth due to respiratory obstruction and ultimately contribute to thrusting the tongue. In addition, also seen after prolonged therapy by levodopa in Parkinsonism, also occurs as an extra pyramidal side effect (acute muscle dystonia) after the use of Neuroleptic (Anti-Psychotic).

Effects

Tongue thrust is normal in infants up to approximately six months of age. The loss of normal baby behavior is one sign that the baby is ready to start eating baby food.

The thrust of the tongue can affect the teeth and mouth. Someone swallows 1,200 to 2,000 times every 24 hours with about four pounds (1.8 kg) of pressure each time. If a person is suffering from tongue thrusting, this continuous pressure tends to force the tooth out of alignment. Many people who have tongue-drives have open bites; the strength of the tongue against the tooth is an important factor in contributing to the "bad bite" (malocclusion). Many orthodontists have completed dental treatment with apparently good results, only to find that the case recurred because of the patient's tongue urges. If the tongue is allowed to continue the action of pushing it against the teeth, the tongue will continue to push the teeth forward and reverse the orthodontic work.

Speeches are not often influenced by swallowing patterns of tongue. The "S" (lisping) sound is the most affected. Lateral gaps (forced air on the side of the tongue and not forward) show dramatic improvement when the tongue's urge is corrected. However, the lisping and tongue impulses are not always related.

Treatment

Treatment for uncontrolled tongue thrust requires retraining of the habit along with the dental appliance.
