src: 2.bp.blogspot.com

The Western Suburbs Magpies (originally the Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club) is an Australian rugby league football club based in Sydney's western suburb of New South Wales. Formed in 1908, the Western , as it is often called, is one of nine club foundations of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as the only entity, left the top competition in 1999 after forming a 50-50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form Wests Tigers. The club are currently pretending sides in the Ron Massey Cup (Opening), Sydney Shield (Open), S.G. (Under 18's) and Harold Matthews Cup (Under 16's) competition.

Campbelltown Stadium, which has a capacity of 20,000, is their home stadium.

History

The club was one of the founding members of the Sydney rugby league competition in 1908. Founded at a meeting on February 4, 1908 at Ashfield Town Hall, they only won one game the following season, as did the second League wooden spangers (after Cumberland in 1908). Although they spend a long time because they also feel the success of the prime minister four times in the mid-20th century. They won their first prime minister in 1930, defeating St. George 27-2. Four years later they defeated the Eastern Suburbs to win their second title. For 1944 NSWRFL Queensland season 1910 player representative Henry Bolewski coached West Suburbs club, replacing Alf Blair, who moved to South Sydney. Wests improved slightly in the previous season, finishing 5 (out of 8), but failed to reach the final, and Bolewski was replaced by a superb club, Frank McMillan.

Wests won a second pair of prime ministers, beating Balmain in 1948 and South Sydney 22-12 in 1952. Both times they beat their third consecutive title hunting club.

1960s

Apart from this opportunity, the club is best known for its three successive grand finals in 1961, 1962 and 1963 against St George Dragons in the midst of their 11-premier journey. The club boast football players like halfback Arthur Summons, Harry 'Bomber' Wells, Kelly O'Shea, Noel Kelly and Peter Dimond. The grand final of 1963 was immortalized in a photograph which became known as 'The Gladiators' after the captain St. George Norm Provan and Summon came out of the field together.

1970s

The final period of glory signaled in the late 1970s where they spent several years on or near-the table, but failed to make the grand final. Coached by Roy Masters and boasting players like fullback John Dorahy, half Tommy Raudonikis, five eight Graeme O'Grady, Gavin Miller, Ron Giteau, Les Boyd, support John Donnelly and Terry Lambs five-eight. Yet an attractive offer from other clubs and then doubts about the club's eligibility led to the years of talent exodus. Wests won the 1977 Amco Cup.

1980s

John Ribot, winger for Wests, was the top scorer for the 1980 season. In 1983 the NSWRFL sought to oust the West from the competition, but a prolonged legal battle to keep their place going, unlike the unhappy Newtown Jets that year. Richard Conti emerged against New South Wales Rugby League bosses John Quayle and Colin Love in 1985, successfully advocating to keep the club fighting in the competition. He was later appointed chairman of the NSWRL Judiciary.

Eventually, Wests moved to Campbelltown in 1987. Ironically, this is where Newtown did not make the move to four years before.

1990s

The West began the process of rebuilding in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Laurie Freier started the 1988 Winfield Cup season as club coach but was replaced during the season by John Bailey.

The club made the semi-finals in 1991 and 1992 under coach Warren Ryan. Wests was the NSWRL Club Champions in 1991 when the three classes reached the semi-finals. The team also made it to the pre-season Challenge Cup final in 1993 but were beaten by a star-studded Canberra team. The club then descended the ladder and the training control was handed over to Wayne Ellis's caretaker. The decision to appoint Tommy Raudonikis as coach to start the 1995 season sent an adrenaline shot to the club. Raudonikis brought the Magpies to the finals in 1996. But the club could not compete in the player market in 1997 thanks to a Super League war that saw players contract soaring to an unsustainable level. In 1998 and 1999, Magpie teams filled by many unknown players struggled to be competitive and twice received wooden spoons. With the club struggling on the pitch and trying to compete financially against the club with News Limited funding, it is on the wall.

Joint ventures

The well-documented Super League War of 1997 between the Super League (News Ltd) and the Australian Rugby League (ARL) resulted in a compromise that in 2000, the National Rugby League (NRL) competition will be contested by just 14 teams.

With the Wests Magpies fighting in the field in the NRL competition, it was decided by the club in mid-1999 that to survive, they would be asked to combine their senior team with other club teams. After initial talks with Canterbury Bulldogs failed, an agreement was reached with Balmain Tigers on 27 July 1999.

The Wests Tigers first competed in the 2000 competition. The club also incorporated the color of its game from two joint venture partners.

Today

The Western Suburbs Magpies home match is played at Campbelltown Stadium, Leumeah and their training facilities, along with offices are at Whitlam Center in Liverpool. The club has advanced facilities here, and they are considered the best in the league.

In 2000, the Western Suburbs Magpies Under 20 team was a runner up to Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, headed by Mitch Zammit and Luke Duffy. The Western Suburbs Magpies last title was won in 2002 when the West Suburbs Magpies captained by Liam Fulton won the New New Wales Rugby League Under 18 competition.

From 2000 to 2012, Western Suburbs Magpies fielded teams in the First Grade NSWRL competition now known as the NSW Cup.

In 2006, Wests Tigers on the advice of Team Sheens pushed the idea that the NRL would be better served with one side of the NSW Cup. The Western Suburbs Council opposed this decision and decided to continue to bring down their own team. Wests Tigers then allocated all NRL contract players to Balmain Tigers (Wests Magpies has six junior players in the group, as opposed to one from Balmain), citing the advantages of both NRL and NSW Cup teams practicing together at the Concord Oval. This continued from 2006 to 2007.

Newcastle chairman Kevin Hammond was disappointed by Wests Tigers' decision and told Wests Tigers about it in 2008, if the Magpies did not receive a fair share of the Wests Tigers, they would form a feeding partnership with Canberra Raiders rivals. The Wests Tigers surrendered.

The Western Suburbs Magpies made the semifinals in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

In 2012, the funds were withheld from the Magpies by Wests Ashfield Leagues Club Directors (not unanimously) as they now support the Wests Tigers proposal for one side of the NSW Cup, although this was done only because Balmain was unable to afford and Wests could.

This is also against the wishes of Magpies Football Club members and they are organizing the Protest Rally through the streets of Campbelltown. Wests Ashfield Leagues Club under pressure to refund the end of the season off after the Magpies players have signed up to play with another team.

Wests Tigers but decided to stop all support from the NSW Magpies Cup side while ongoing support for Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers though it continues to be reminded that Wests Tigers should not be the one to tell Wests Ashfield what to do; they are employees of Wests Ashfield and Balmain, NOT the opposite. The Magpies failed to win the game in 2012 while Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers made it to the Grand Final where they were beaten by Newtown Jets.

The Magpies fell back to the third level of the Ron Massey Cup in 2013, with members voting for a separate NSW Cup team squad in 2014, although this did not materialize.

In 2015, Magpies adds teams in the Sydney Shield competition to act as a feeder for their Ron Massey Cup campaign.

In 2016, Suburbs West made an early final match against St Mary's in The Ron Massey Cup but lost the match. 2017 proved to be a bad year for Wests when Ron Massey Cup side finished with a wooden spoon and The Sydney Shield finished second last.

On June 5, 2017, it was announced that the Western Suburbs had submitted an offer for inclusion in the Intrust Super Premiership season for 2018. Re-entry to Intrust Super Premiership ended the 5-year club absent from the top-level NSWRL competition that it has been participating continuously from 1908 to 2012 For the return of the team will be trained by former 1st class Suburbs West Brett Hodgson.

St. Luke's Park was home to the clubs of Western Suburbs in 1910 and 1911. They began playing their match at Pratten Park in Ashfield in 1912, but after pressure from local residents there the council refused the club's permission to use the land, forcing them to return to St. Luke's Oval from 1915 to 1919. The Magpies have been playing in the three yards of the house since it was founded. They returned to Pratten Park in 1920, remaining there until 1966, the club subsequently played in Pratten Park sporadically for the next two decades playing games there in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1977 and 1985. The very first class game played at Pratten Park on 18 August 1985 against Penrith, Penrith won the match with 42-16. They then moved to Lidcombe Oval in 1967. This is because the Ashfield board does not allow the club to play matches on Sunday (as this is church day). In 1987, they moved to Campbelltown's Orana Park (located in adjacent Leumeah), which, after a $ 25 million renovation, is now called Campbelltown Stadium which is now one of the home yards of Wests Tigers. The Magpies' lower class side plays most of the home games at Campbelltown Stadium, with occasional game moves to the Lidcombe Oval.
