Histori
The FJR1300 was introduced to Europe in 2001, before arriving in North America in 2002, with the appointment of the 2003 model year, and is offered in non-ABS versions only. Model 2003 garnered several awards in the Sport Touring category from various magazines.
North American 2004 models include non-ABS versions with traditional blue anodized brake calipers and new ABS versions with silver calipers. Other improvements include upgrades to suspension levels, 320 mm (298 mm) disc brakes, and a fairing pocket for small items.
In 2005, the North American model remained unchanged with non-ABS and ABS models.
In 2006, the US and the rest of the world model year synced with the introduction of what has been known as the 'Gen-II' version of the machine. The design changes include significant trailing arm changes, final revision drive ratio, curved radiator showing greater surface area, instrumentation changes, improved alternators and significant attention to airflow changes to address the heat issues reported in previous years. Yamaha adds an adjustable ventilation to the FJR1300, allowing the rider to direct the air closer to or away from the body. Starting with the 2006 model Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) and the associated Yamaha braking scheme calling it 'Unified Braking System' (UBS) became the standard.
Also, the FJR1300AS model (FJR1300AE in US and Canada) was introduced which has semi-automatic transmission. The AE variant was discontinued for 2010, although US models continued to be sold in markets outside the United States and Canada.
For 2007, several minor changes were made to the ECU to address potential issues related to altitude changes under certain conditions. In 2008 a change was made to 'feel' throttle, to increase the low speed on/off throttle transition. In addition, Yamaha is replacing suppliers for ABS systems. Further improvements in throttle control were introduced with the 2009 model.
For 2012 the optional preheated handrail became standard.
For 2013, FJR1300 receives a large number of updates, being the 'Gen-III' version. Bodywork is all new on the front of the bike for better airflow and heat engine management, and a new fast acting windshield mechanism introduced. The signal headlamp/turn position is now LED and there are LED accent lights around the headlights, and now there is one horn instead of two in previous years. In markets outside the US and Canada, the US model (AutoShift) receives an electrically adjustable suspension and an upside-down fork - the suspension changes introduced to the North American model the following year as a model option known as 'ES'.
The dashboard is also revised and now includes three pages of user-customizable information that allows the driver to choose what information is displayed on each page, from the following list: Odometer, Trip 1, Trip 2, Cooling Temperature, Air Temperature, Range (for empty) MPG Average, Current MPG, Timer 1. There are two other timers and another two meters distance to track the maintenance interval that can be reset, but not shown on the information page.
Mechanically, the machine now has a layered cylinder layer (instead of pressed) for better heat dissipation. The new ECU and now use the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCCT) system, which is a carrier-by-wire system. Implementations on the FJR1300 include 'D-Mode', which combines two driving modes, 'Sport' and 'Touring', the main difference being the smooth throttle response. In addition, the new ECU combines as a standard has an integrated Traction Control System (TCS) that can be disabled, and Cruise Control.
In addition to the new controls for D-Mode and cruise control, some controls are different. There's a new rocker in the left hand grip that controls the heated grip and which page is displayed in the information panel; which serves to provide the rocker controlled by the trigger button near the left index finger. The stop/run rocker now stops/starts/starts with the last temporary position; the flasher danger button is where the previous starter button is located. A similar rocker switch for lamp control provides high/low/flash control.
In 2014, the FJR1300 split into two models: the FJR1300A and FJR1300ES. The FJR1300A is almost identical to the 2013 model, but the cruise control programming is changed to increase the maximum set speed from 83MPH to 100MPH. The FJR1300ES includes this update as well, and adds reversible forks and suspensions that can be electronically adjusted.
Suspensions on the ES model can be adjusted through a menu system built into the measuring group. The front fork has adjustable damping, with three main settings (Soft, Standard, Hard) and seven adjustments (-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3) in each level for fine-tuning. The rear shock has an electronically adjustable preload, with four settings (Solo, Solo with luggage, Two riders, Two riders with luggage). While attenuation can be set quickly, preload can only be changed when stopped.
In December 2015 Yamaha introduced the revised FJR for 2016, with, among other changes, 6-speed transmissions (both in standard and automatic versions), coupling/mount support, LED heads and tail lights and LED cornering lights.

Design
Engine
The FJR1300 has 1.298Ã, cc (79,2Ã, à ° cuÃ, in) transverse-mounted inline-four engines with four valves per cylinder.
Transmission
The FJR1300 uses a five-speed manual gearbox (six acceleration models from 2016 and beyond) with wide gear ratio. The last drive is through the shaft, wrapped in a swingarm, which has a monoshock suspension with a quick-set remote set of two adjustable pre-loaded positions.
The FJR1300AE/AS model has an electronic clutch, called Yamaha YCC-S. There is no clutch lever on this model. In contrast, the YCC-S system allows the rider to shift using a set of manually operated buttons on the left handlebar or through the standard dental gear lever. The electronic clutch is controlled by the internal computer, allowing the gearshift to be completed in about 0.2 seconds. The gearbox pattern is also unconventional because the neutral is at the lower end of the range, otherwise the gearbox is identical to the model A. The ECU automatically controls the electronic clutch and ignition timing to ensure smooth gearshift and will move the clutch in a stationary position. Stalling engines are usually not possible.
The 2016 model, which was introduced in December 2015, has a 6-speed transmission.
Chassis
Frame of the FJR1300 is a twin spar design made from aluminum alloy; The machine is a very stressful member.
Electrical system
The FJR1300 has a standard 12 volt, negative ground electric system. The 2006 and newer models have lighter, cigarette lighter-style lighter accessory connectors and punctuated in the left central locking glovebox. The 2003 US model lacked a glovebox or electrical outlet; while models of 2004 and 2005 have glove boxes, they do not include electrical sockets. In addition, the 2006 and newer models have larger alternators that can support more electrical accessories than their predecessors.
More
The FJR1300 has an adjustable electric windshield controlled by a rocker switch on the handlebars. In the Gen I and Gen II models, by default the shield returns to its lowest position when the lock is turned off, but some riders choose to disable the 'restore' function. In the Gen III model, the windshield defends its position until it changes with a rocker switch, even when the ignition key is turned off.
A number of changes were made starting with the 2006 model year, including adding a customizable airflow system to the rider.
All Gen-II AE/AS models (and some A models, depending on year and market) have a standard integrated heat handle handlebar with speed sensitive adjustment (available as an aftermarket OEM kit for models not so equipped by the manufacturer). Handlebars can be adjusted position, with 3 settings, and seats can be adjusted to high or low, with about an inch in between.
Pannier locking sides are provided as standard in most markets and some markets include fabric liners that can be used for all cases. Each case will take a full face helmet. Factory options include foot protector, hand protection, fairing protector, bigger wind screen, and color coordinated top box to name a few.
Many motorists equip their bikes with a servo-operated cruise control system. There are several providers that supply the market. The 2013-2015 model has standard cruise control.
Police model
In Ireland and England, the FJR1300 has replaced the Honda ST1300 Pan-Europe as a patrol motor with several police forces, following the model's withdrawal due to concerns over high-speed handling. The FJR is a patrol vehicle used by the Trinidad and Tobago police including units in the convoys of the President and Prime Minister. It is also used as a standard patrol motor Royal Dutch Marechaussee. Danish Federal Police, France and Australia, Lithuanian Police and Civil Guardia Civil also use the FJR1300.
