China Ocean Shipping ( Group ) Company (Chinese: ?????? (??) ? ), known as COSCO or COSCO Group , is China's state-owned freight forwarding and logistics service company. Its headquarters are located in Ocean Plaza in Xicheng District in Beijing. It has 1,114 vessels, including 365 dry bulk carriers, a fleet of containers with a capacity of 1,580,000 twenty foot equivalent units (TEU), and a fleet of tankers of 120 vessels. The fleet is calling more than a thousand ports around the world. It ranks fourth largest in both the number of container ships and the volume of aggregate containers in the world. In 2012, it is among the top 15 brands of China.

It is the largest dry bulk carrier in China and one of the largest dry bulk shipping carriers worldwide. In addition, the Group is the largest ship operator in China. The list of operated vessels can be found on the COSCO fleet list. In February 2016, the COSCO Group joined the China Shipping Group to establish China COSCO Shipping.

In April 2016, COSCO agreed to purchase 51% of the Port Authority of Piraeus, which is listed on the Athens Stock Exchange (Athex: Ã, PPA) and is a constituent of the FTSE/Athex Large Cap index. The subsidiary of COSCO Piraeus Container Terminal ( PCT ) has operated two Piers in Piraeus Port since 2009.

In July 2017, COSCO entered a $ 6.3 billion bid to buy its Hong Kong-based rival, Orient Overseas (International) Limited. Bids have been received in accordance with shareholder and regulatory approvals. This will make it the third largest container shipping company in the world with over 400 fleets.

Incidents and accidents

Norwegian oil spill 2009

On 31st July 2009, Panama-flagged bulk carriers, Full City , operated by COSCO, suffered engine failure and crashed near Langesund, Telemark, Norway, during a storm, spilling 200 tons of heavy fuel bunker fuel in wildlife areas that are ecologically and environmentally sensitive.

2010 Great Barrier Reef grounding

On April 3, 2010, MV Shen Neng 1 ran aground 38 nautical miles (70 km km; 44 miles) east of Great Keppel Island, Australia. The ship, carrying 975 tons of heavy bunker fuel, began to leak oil in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which was closed for commercial delivery (it was already 15 nautical miles (28 km per 17 miles) of course). The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has revealed that the submission plan is filed for Shen NengÃ, 1 to travel between Douglas Shoal and Capricorn Group, where there is a distance of 6 nautical miles (11 km, 6.9 miles).
