cruiser is a motorcycle with American-style machines from the 1930s to early 1960s, including those made by Harley-Davidson, Indians, Excelsior and Henderson. The position of the rider usually puts the foot forward and hands up, with the vertebrae erect or leaning slightly. The typical cruiser engine emphasizes ease of driving and shifting gears, with plenty of low-end torque but not necessarily a lot of horsepower, traditionally V-twins but inline engines have become more common. Cruisers with better performance than usual, including more horsepower, stronger brakes and better suspension, often called cruiser power.

Japanese companies began to produce models of joyful early cruisers in the mid-1980s, and by 1997 the market had grown to nearly 60 percent of the US market, resulting in a number of motorcycle manufacturers including BMW, Honda, Moto Guzzi, Yamaha, Suzuki, Victory and Victory at this time or have had an important model evocative of American cars.

Harley-Davidsons and other cruisers with extensive luggage for the tour have been called, sometimes underestimated or jocularly, baggers, or full of baggers, as well as dressers, full dressers, or a fully clothed tour. These terms are no longer limited to cruisers, but can be used to refer to touring motorcycles.

Cruise ships often form the basis for custom motorcycle projects that produce modified bikes to meet the owner's ideals, and thus are a source of pride and achievement.

Power cruiser is the name used to distinguish a bike in a cruiser class that has a higher power level. They often come with improved brakes and suspension, better ground clearance, and premium surface finishing, as well as a more muscular exotic or modern style (non-traditional cruiser).

Many of Japan's electric explorers and cruisers in 1980 had a more neutral driving position. While traditional cruisers have limited performance and backside capabilities due to low-slung designs, cruiser power or similar performance-oriented cruisers can lean farther for better cornering. Otherwise, customization can improve the bike's slim angle to allow cornering at higher speeds.
