The Dana/Spicer Model 60 is an automotive axle manufactured by Dana Holding Corporation and used in OEM pickup and limited passenger car applications by Chevrolet, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Ford and Land Rover. There is a front and rear version of Dana 60. It can be easily identified by its straight-shaft tube, 10 asymmetric cap bolts, and "60" cast into housing. The weight rating of the gross axle is often lowered by the vehicle manufacturer for safety and tire reasons. They are also lowered to reduce the load on other powertrain components such as transmission and transfer case. Dana 60 As is also increasingly turning into many specialized offroad apps to accommodate larger tires and deep compound gearing with differential locking.

History

In the mid-1970s, the Big Three started using this axle. GM began to end it in 1988 to support the Independent suspension, while still offering it on some of the higher GVWR trucks (V-30) until 1991. Dodge used Dana 60 to 2002. The Third Generation Dodge Rams dropped Dana 60 for AAM as. Ford still uses the front axle of Fund 60. Manufactured in both Kingpin and Ball joint variations, "standard" (low pinion) and "inverted cut" rotation (pinion height) variations and open and limited slips, and locking variations. The housing material is a gray iron in the early ax and ductile iron in the later axle. GM and Ford Fund 60 use hub locking. Dodge Dana 60 as using a locking hub until 1994 when the Center Axle Disconnect (CAD) system was adopted. However, in 2002 the gradual Rams model of the CAD system left some of the year 2002 Dana 60 axles locked permanently.

Three Great variations

  • The Ford version is a driver-side differential reduction, reversed gears, and tapered books until 1991. The shaft then has a spherical joint. Ford Dana 60 as most feature 35 shaft axis in spline, but some 30 spline. Larger brakes and 35 spline outer shafts were made standard in 2005.
  • The Dodge version is a passenger-side differential reduction, a standard rotational gear, a kingpin knuckle and 35 spline spindle shafts on the starting model. Second Generation Axle is the driver's side with the ball joint. 30 spline axle shafts are used instead of 35 splines, except for models 2000, 2001 and 2002 equipped with 32 spline shaft axes.
  • The GM version is a passenger-side differential reduction, a standard rotational gear, a kingpin knuckle and 35 spline spindle shafts.

Aftermarket Dana 60

The front axle of Fund 60 has a lot of aftermarket/third party support, including many improvements. Powerful shaft axles, universal connections and spherical connections are widely available, as well as many options for traction-control devices such as differential locking and limited slip differential. Shaft axes, universal joints and carriers made of chromol steel are even available. High capacity differential differentials available that increase the amount of oil held differential. This envelope also has a heat sink that helps keep the axle cool.

Super 60 Fund (Dana S 60)

The Super 60 Fund is an upgraded version of the Dana 60 axle.

Differences in the Super 60 Fund versus the usual 60 Fund:

  • Steel tubes larger and thicker in diameter (3.75 inches in diameter and ½ in thickness)
  • Larger rings and pinions that increase the contact area and overall strength.
  • Some use a larger Universal Joint ("1550") that increases the power and steering angle.
  • Dental net gears are formed to increase strength.
  • The Super Dana 60 housing was also found on the 2005 F250/F350, but the internal is 9.75 "ring gear and smaller universal connection.
  • All created with 35 spline spindle shafts.
  • 2019 Ram 1500 Super Dana 60 option with just the maximum package, just the rear drive.

Rear axle of Fund 60

The rear axle of Dana 60 was first introduced in 1955 as a full floating axis on the Ford F-250 and is still in use today.

  • Produced in both full float and semi float variations. Spring float fumes have a GAWR of up to 5,500 pounds and a full float asbor rated up to 6,500 pounds.
  • Full floating variants are common while semi-floating axles exist, but are less common. The number of spline shafts varies, with the most common 30 splines.

Quadrasteer

Quadrasteer is a choice on a large-size truck 2002-2005, a single rear wheel truck. The constant-speed joint is used instead of the universal connection.

Dana 61

The Fund Variation 60 known as Dana 61 is made to accommodate the gear ratios that allow for better fuel mileage. This was done as a direct result of the 1973 oil crisis. A gear ratio of 3.07: 1 is common to this axle and can not be achieved in the usual 60 Funds. To allow for different gearing, Dana 61 has a larger pinion balance. This offset means that different carriers and different rings and pinions should be used.

Taking Dodge Cummins from "First Generation" which is not equipped with overdrive transmission usually has a 3.07: 1 front wheel 61 because higher gears are required to achieve a decent road speed at a low set speed 2500 rpm from the Cummins engine in the pickup.

Dana 61 is made in semi-float and full-float as to select 4ÃÆ'-2 and 4x4 Ford / 4 -ton and 1 Ton Pickup and Vans from 1974 to 1987. The front axle of Dana 61 was selectively used in Dodge 4ÃÆ' â € "4 3 / 4 -ton and 1 Ton pickups from 1987 to 1993. Although the gear set of 3,07: 1 and 3,31: 1 was common for Dana 61, the lower gears set deeper than (4.10: 1 down) did not.

The external case of Fund 61 is similar to Dana 60 HD in the use of double bind: a reinforcing frame extending from the tube all the way around the differential box, in addition to an elevated cover cover. This is preferable to the standard "Dana" task 60 in which tube strengthening extends diagonally to join the flange cover.

Some Dana 61 share a common carrier with Dana 60 section # 706040x, which means gearsets (3.07-4.10) will swap between the two. Dana differential case # 706400 (3.07-3.73) appears in the Fund's section catalog to become a 61-specific Fund. The 706040x carrier can be purchased relatively cheaply and is used to set up lower gears in the axle of Fund 61, such as when replacing the damaged or damaged Fund 60 with Dana 61 while maintaining the factory gear ratio.

Dana 53

Dana 53 first appeared in the late 1940s and was much like Dana 60. Although all Dana 53 is semi-floating, rear axle, 9.25 "diameter of tooth ring.It was used as an OEM in the 1960s full-size (C-body ) The Chrysler passenger car was equipped with a CID 440 engine. Dana 53 was removed in the late 1960s, replaced by Dana 60.
