The front operating base ( forward operating base (FOB)) is a secure forward military position, usually a military base, used to support tactical operations. FOB may or may not contain airfields, hospitals, or other facilities. Bases can be used for long periods of time. FOB is traditionally supported by the Primary Operations Base needed to provide backup support to them. FOB also increases reaction time to the local area compared to having all troops on the main operating base.
In its most basic form, the FOB consists of a barbed wire ring around a position with an enriched entrance control point, or ECP. More advanced FOBs include assembling ground dams, concrete barriers, gates, watch towers, bunkers and other power protection infrastructure. They are often built from the Hesco bastion.
In Afghanistan during 2011 there were 137 British bases during Operation Herrick, all closed while operations ended in 2014.
